The All New 2012 Buick Regal GS

Below are excerpts from Buick.com and Motortrend.com
The Regal GS boldly announces its arrival with signature front and rear styling—and raises expectations with the ECOTEC 2.0L high output turbocharged engine offering more torque than Acura TSX V-6 and Audi A4 Sport. Tuned to deliver 270-hp and 295 lb.-ft of torque, the GS manages a 6.7-second 0-60 time, a good deal faster than its proposed competitors, the Infiniti G25 (7.6 seconds), Acura TSX (7.0 seconds), and Lexus IS250 (7.1 seconds).

The GS holds a respectable average 0.92 g in lateral acceleration, beating the TSX V-6's average of 0.83 g, and the A4 Quattro's average of 0.91 g. The GS completed our figure-eight in 25.9 seconds, quicker than the TSX V-6 (26.7 seconds), and just barely slower than the all wheel drive Audi (25.7 seconds). The GS also out-braked its competitors in our tests, stopping from 60-0 mph in a sports-car-rivaling 105 feet (to put that in perspective, a Corvette Grand Sport we tested stops just a foot shorter), compared to the 110 feet needed for the A4, and a pedestrian 129 feet for the TSX V-6. These accomplishments are in no small part due to the GS' big Brembos and our tester's larger optional 20-inch wheels wrapped in sticky Pirelli P-Zero rubber - a bargain at only $700 extra.

Numbers aside, the Regal GS is a lot of fun to drive. Despite the GS sending all of its 270 hp to the front wheels, the aforementioned HiPer strut system apparently does its job well and dials out any excessive torque steer. Launching the car with traction control off gets you plenty of wheel spin, but with our optional 255/35 P-Zeros, the GS eventually finds its footing, and the turbo blasts you through first gear in a hurry. Operation of the Regal GS' mandatory six-speed manual (a six-speed auto arrives next year) somehow feels very German -- not surprising, as the car the Regal is based on was primarily developed by GM's Russelsheim, Germany-based Opel branch. Shifter feel is refined, possessing a subtle crispness that could even be compared to some BMWs. The two alternate suspension modes, Sport and GS, each make the damper settings a smidge more aggressive than standard mode. According to Buick, sport mode is about 20 percent stiffer than normal. GS mode is yet another 20 percent stiffer than Sport, and also increases steering effort. That added steering feel made GS the default mode for us whenever spirited driving was called for. As such, we found little use for the mid-level suspension setting. Plus, hitting the GS button changes the gauge backlighting from blue to red -- so why ever settle for plain, old Sport mode? We're not saying that color-changing gauges play any part in the GS' performance recipe, but boy, do they look cool. At Parsons Buick in Plainville we the have 2012 Regal GS in stock and ready to rip down the road, come test drive your's today.
